There are three or more different types of timers use in the Whirlpool/Kenmore washer and they all mount different.

To remove the oldest type timer, you needed to push the timer knob in, unscrew the knob by turning it counterclockwise, open the controls panel, remove the holding screws and remove the wire harness. To install the new one reverse the procedure.

The newest timers are very different. The timer knob doesn't screw in to the timer shaft any more. Now the timer knob is held in place by using a plastic wedge that goes in and out of the center of the timer shaft.

You will need to open the controls panel, go behind the timer and pull out the wedge that is inside of the timer shaft, then you could pull out the knob. The easier way to explain it is by showing you how to do it.
