The push to start switch is a safety device wired in the motor circuit.

There are two different push to start switches use in the Whirlpool 29 inch electric dryers

The same switches are use on gas or electric dryer and they are checked & replaced the same way

The regular single pole single throw switch: This switch is use just to start the motor running. After the motor gets to the full running speed, the motor centrifugal switch removes the push to start switch from the motor circuit.

When the motor stops running, the motor centrifugal sets the push to start switch back in to the motor switch.
 

The push to start relay switch:  This switch use a relay inside of the switch to keep the switch connected to the motor circuit all the time that the motor is running

If the relay inside of this Whirlpool 29 inch electric dryer push to start relay switch fails, the dryer will start when you push the switch, but the motor will stops running when you stop pushing the switch
